Brand History



Croster Co.,Ltd. started its business as a “Hiuchi Shoten” in 1956. The founder, Koshiro Higuchi was engaged in developing backpacks and mountaineering products during the post war reconstruction period, which was long before the first mountaineering boom in Japan. He has succeeded in creating the most advanced products at that time and received favorable reputation from beginners to professional climbers. Products were well suited to climbers who would go on the mountains of Himalayas, European Alps, Winter Northern Alps, and Winter Tanigawadake as well. Mr. Higuchi has pursued in creating products which can be used under extreme conditions of the high mountains or mountains in winter season. His craftsmanship to search for the best quality, reliability, and safety allowed no compromise. This spirit has been handed down to the company and workers to this day and will keep influencing to the next generation.

Croster Co.,Ltd. has been globalized from its early period.

Being globalized made us cherish more of Kaminarimon, Asakusa as the place of birth.
We keep promoting Asakusa worldwide through our products. Then we hope this leads to the revival of Asakusa as the cultural origin from Edo, Meiji and Taisho era.

    The founder, Koshiro Higuchi established “Higuch Industry, Inc.”
    Start production/sales of TANNE brand products as well as contract manufacture of Gurecha, Lhotse, Pioneer, and RCC models (with product numbers) ice-axes.

  • Dome tents

    Acquired the utility model registration of “Dome tents”.
    Development begun 1959, acquired the license in 1962 then start production of Dome tent. It became a mainstream item for family camp.

  • Established “Higuch Industry, Inc.” in Machiya, Arakawa-ku, Tokyo.
    Started manufacture and sales of tents, back-packs and sleeping bags.

  • Established office at 8, Izumi, Misato-shi, Saitama pref., Japan.

  • Chouinard Dragon

    Conclude a distributorship agreement with a US company, Great Pacific Iron Works, which established by Yvon Chouinard. Acquires a commodity registration for “Chouinard Dragon” for bags and sports products.

  • Moved head office to 1-6-2, Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo.
    Acquired the utility model registration of Chouinard Dragon’s “shoulder-strap harness system.”

    Revolutionary invention to the Bag Industry! “Shoulder-Strap Harness System”

    Succeeded in development of a “shoulder-strap harness system” with Great Pacific Iron Works in U.S.A. Acquires an utility model rights in 1982. This contributed development of the vertical back pack.

  • Changed the company name from “Higuhi Industry Inc.” to “Croster Co.,Ltd.”
    Acquires an utility model rights of “Accordion Zack”.

    The world’s first technology! “Urethane Waterproof” is Japan origin.

    In 1979, Chouinard succeeded creating a world’s first backpack using “Urethane waterproof” which does not change its quality at -40℃. Submits an utility model registration. This still considered as the most advanced method of waterproofing in the Japanese Industry.
    In 1993, acquires an utility model rights for “Accordion system,” which is the standard product for accordion backpack.
    In 1998, acquires an utility model rights for “quick-release system.”

    The origin of “D-bag”

    The invention started in 1959, registered utility model rights in 1962, then starts sales.
    Since establishment, we’ve been developing “D-bag” and became one of the most popular outdoor goods now.
    About the origin of the name “D-bag”, there are various opinions. But truth is, it came from the shape of bag which similar to the alphabet character “D” while carrying. Which is we start selling together with Ito Sports shop in front of Kinshicho station, Tokyo.

  • Made a license agreement with ARP Company for WENZEL brand.

  • Made a license agreement with ARP company for SIERRA DESIGNS brand.

  • Contract the commodity registration with US company, MOUNTAIN SMITH.

  • Move to Kaminarimon from Misato then set it as the head office.

  • Contract the license agreement with US company, PLAYBOY.

  • Contract the license agreement with US company, NIKE.

  • Authorized by NIKE as the proper factory to NIKE standard.

  • Established Misato Products Center as the inspection/repair center.
    Contract the exclusive distribution agreement for all NIKE sports accessories with US company, ENI-JR286.

  • Established Croster Co.,Ltd. Osaka branch.

  • Merged Camel Co,Ltd.

  • Contract the sales agreement with PUMA JAPAN and LEVIS.

  • Koshiro Higuchi became the representative director.

  • Contract the sales agreement of LEGO brand backpacks with GLP Co.,Ltd.

  • Contract the sales agreement of POLO brand backpacks with Ralph Lauren Japan Co.,Ltd.
